Frequently asked questions

1. What is Ev@lang?
Ev@lang is an online algorithm that calculates your level of French, based on the data you enter during an online testing session.

2. Can anybody take the Ev@lang test?
Absolutely. You do not need to be affiliated with any centre or school and can pass the test entirely by yourself. However, you will be requested to pay the fees of your test at one of the payment platforms offered on My-T. These platforms are mostly operated by our clients. You do not need to be taking classes to take the test, but free online registration will be requested for secure payment.

3. Who created Ev@lang?
Ev@lang was produced and released by the Centre International d'Etudes Pédagogiques (CIEP), an Institute depending on the French Ministry of National Education whose mission is to ensure professional training, ensure the quality of higher education and issue certifications in French. The CIEP has a widely recognized expertise in language evaluation.

4. How does Ev@lang work?
Ev@lang works by asking you questions to test your level of French in three domains of competence: oral skills, writing skills, vocabulary and grammar. The algorithm monitors your answers and adapts the difficulties of the questions to your level. It decides automatically when to stop the testing session and calculates your level.

5. Is Ev@lang expensive?
Ev@lang costs about the same as half an hour of a regular French course.

6. How much time does the test require?
It varies, as the test is adaptive, between 30 and 45 minutes.

7. Do I get a diploma when the test is finished?
No, because self-evaluation is necessarily limited. However, immediately after completing your test, you get a printed report of the level that you have reached, for each of the components (oral, writing, grammar and vocabulary) that you have chosen to test. If you are looking for a diploma (DELF, DALF) or a certification (TCF), please contact an Alliance Franccedil;aise examination center. Note however, that the cost is higher. We recommend combining self-evaluation and formal examinations.

8. How do I pass the test?
Please follow the instructions provided in the left menu. Please note that the test can be passed in several sessions, should you require it.

9. Who operates the ©My-T platform ?
This platform is operated by Alliance Française Halifax (AFH) which is a member of the North American Network of Alliance Française. AFH works in close partnership with the Delegation of Alliance Française for Canada" (Ottawa), and with the Delegation of Alliance Française in the United States of America (Washington).
Since May 2019, AFH is proud to be the only official, CIEP-accredited distributor of the Ev@lang test in North America.

Designed by the International Center for Pedagogical Studies (CIEP), Evalang precisely certifies a foreign language level, on three skills: oral comprehension, in reading, grammar and lexicon.

Choose the skills you want to test !

Evalang is an adaptative test : it uses the answers provided by the candidate to adapt the level of difficulty of newly asked questions, thereby finding automatically the level of competency of the candidate.
The skills evaluated by Evalang are made up of independent modules.
Description of modules
  • Oral comprehension: Listening to records of conversations in realistic situations
  • Written comprehension: Reading of written documents
  • Grammar & lexicon: Choice of the grammatical or lexical form adapted to each proposed sentence.

Evalang is fast and accurate

It takes at most 35 minutes for the Evalang test to calculate the language level of the candidate : Oral comprehension (maximum: 14 minutes)
  • Written comprehension (maximum: 14 minutes)
  • Grammar & lexicon (maximum: 7 minutes)
For each skill, the position of the candidate is found on a 12-levels scale. This evaluation grid is composed of the six levels of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFRL), and of six inter-levels that are used to refine the precision of the evaluation.

    Immediate delivery of test results

As soon as the test has been completed, the candidate can download and print an attestation of level approved by the CIEP.
Organizations that use Evalang in examinations may allow applicants to view the test results, or prohibit them from doing so.
A detailed statement of results by competency and by candidate is available for the organizers.
